What are Emissions?
We all live and breathe the same air, which makes emissions all of our concern. Emissions are dangerous fumes and pollutants that are made when your vehicle is running. Using an array of sensors, computerized engine controls, and exhaust components, the emissions system greatly reduces the amount of carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbons (HC), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) put out by your vehicle. By law, your emissions system must be kept in optimal operating condition.
Phoenix, Arizona Emissions
In Phoenix, all vehicles are required by law to pass emissions testing to obtain registration. Some vehicles require emissions testing every year, while other vehicles require emissions testing every other year.
New residents of Arizona will need to get their vehicle emissions tested before they can get it registered.
If your vehicle fails its Arizona emissions inspection, you must have it repaired and re-inspected. Your re-inspection is free if you return to the same inspection location within 60 days and bring your original inspection report with repair information.
How to Make Sure Your Honda Will Pass Emissions
To ensure your Honda passes emissions, the best thing you can do is have an emissions inspection performed by one of our mechanics before the test. Here is a short checklist of items to look over.
- Your gas tank should be at least half full. Try and fill your tank with fresh fuel before the test.
- Dirty and/or deteriorated oil can cause higher emissions. Get your oil changed before your emissions test.
- Get a tune-up. Make sure the air and fuel filters are changed/clean.
- Make sure your Honda is running at the proper operating temperature per the temperature indicator on your dashboard.
- The “check engine” light should be OFF. Be sure your gas cap is securely tightened. A loose cap can cause the “check engine” light to come on.
Vehicles with a check engine light on will not pass Arizona emissions. Bring your car to us and we will do a complimentary check engine light scan.
My Honda Failed Emissions, Now What?
Driving conditions, mileage, the age of the vehicle, poor vehicle maintenance, low-quality fuel, worn/damaged sensors, and cracked/dry-rotted vacuum hoses are all factors that can wear down your emissions system and cause you to fail the test.
If you have recently failed emissions, you can bring your Honda into us for an inspection, diagnosis, and repair. Our certified technicians will look over the following items to determine where the problem may lie.
- Air Filter
- Air/Vacuum Leaks
- Catalytic Converter

- Fuel Filter
- Fuel Injectors
- Fuel Pressure Regulator
- Idle Control Valve
