What are Emissions?
Everyone breathes the same air, which makes emissions everyone’s concern. Emissions are the dangerous pollutants and fumes that your vehicle produces when it’s running. The emissions system uses an assortment of sensors, computerized engine controls, and exhaust components to significantly reduce the amount of carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbons (HC), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) put out by your vehicle. It is required by law that your emissions system is kept in optimal operating condition.
Phoenix, Arizona Emissions
In Phoenix, all vehicles are required by law to pass emissions testing to obtain registration. Some vehicles require emissions testing every year, while other vehicles require emissions testing every other year.
New residents of Arizona will need to get their vehicle emissions tested before they can get it registered.
If your vehicle fails its Arizona emissions inspection, you must have it repaired and re-inspected. Your re-inspection is free if you return to the same inspection location within 60 days and bring your original inspection report with repair information.
How to Make Sure Your BMW Will Pass Emissions
- Fill your tank with fresh fuel before the test, and make sure the tank is at least half full.
- Have your oil changed before the emissions test as dirty and/or deteriorated oil can cause higher emissions.
- Get a tune-up and be sure the air and fuel filters are changed/clean.
- Make sure your BMW is running at the proper operating temperature per the temperature indicator on your dashboard.
- The “check engine” light should be OFF. A loose gas cap can cause the “check engine” light to come on, so make sure it is tightly secured.
